The background of the police crackdown on illegal activities related to virtual assets is due to the sharp increase in the number of transaction participants, reaching 5.8 million (as of April 2021, FSC) due to the recent fever of investment in virtual assets, and rapid fluctuations in virtual asset prices. In addition, in order to recover from damage and prevent recidivism, the proceeds of crimes were confiscated and collected prior to prosecution, and about 250.6 billion won of crime proceeds were preserved from January of this year to the present (※ based on the court's decision).
On the same day, the police said that as cases of fraud and similar receipts related to virtual assets continue to occur, such as △investment in virtual asset exchanges or coins, △provision of excess of principal △providing valueless coins after receiving money △investing fraud under the guise of listing self-developed coins. Special precautions should be taken to avoid any damage, and in particular, according to the revised Special Payment Act that took effect in March of this year, virtual asset exchanges that have not been reported until September may be closed and withdrawn, etc.
